What are you looking forward to? In the days since Apple revealed iOS 15, plenty of stuff has been announced, much of it very impressive. Here’s my selection of the coolest stuff, most of it under-reported until now. Oh, and there’s a splendid little way to interact with your iPhone that’s just been revealed. Check that out here.
1. Universal Control works in a particular orientation.
You can connect three Apple devices in a spectacular new way. Put an iPad, an iMac and a MacBook Pro, for instance, next to each other and just watch as you can drag your iMac Magic Mouse back and forth and see the cursor plonk from one display to the next. It looks sensational.
But the interesting thing is you need the devices side-by-side, you can’t have one above the other. As you drag the cursor from the MacBook towards the iPad, say, you see it begin to appear on the tablet display. As it appears there, you’ll also see a gray bar with vertical arrows. These are designed so you can place the iPad in just the right place so the horizontal drag is perfect and effortless.
2. The Magnifying Glass For Text is Back.
In iOS 13 and before, a magnifying glass loupe would appear hovering over text when you were typing. It was an elegant circle that made it easy to find just the right place to plonk the cursor.
MORE FOR YOU
In iOS 14, it was gone. This is something I made quite a stink about whenever I got the chance to bend an Apple exec’s ear.
I’m not pretending this had any effect on what Apple did, but I am delighted to say the magnifying glass is back.
It’s not quite the same as before. It’s now a lozenge-shape sitting horizontally just above your finger to reveal what’s below. Still elegant and arguably more useful.
3. Temporary extra iCloud storage
This is clever. When you’re updating your iPhone or iPad to the next software, it can be tricky if you’re low on storage. The operating system traditionally takes up quite a bit of space and if you don’t have that storage available, updating is awkward. Not least if you’re on Apple’s free data storage level on iCloud, 5GB.
Not with iOS 15, or other forthcoming software updates. Apple will provide extra storage for transferring data to a new device. Apple said, “Now when you buy a new device you can use iCloud Backup to move your data to your new device, even if you’re low on storage. iCloud will grant you as much storage as you need to complete a temporary backup, free of charge, for up to three weeks. This allows you to get all your apps, data, and settings onto your device automatically.”
4. The Weather App looks Stunning
As Sebastiaan de With from Halide Camera points out, the new Weather app has a great new design.
This even means the animations interact with what’s on screen, which adds up to rain that bounces off the interface elements, and lightning that seems to electrically enhance the temperature figures.
Of course, there’s more information as well, not least thanks to Apple’s purchase of the astonishing Dark Sky a couple of years back.
5. Apple Wallet ID
I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. There are so many things to take with you when you leave home. Wouldn’t it be simpler if you could leave some behind? Well, I carry much less cash now, because Apple Pay is so widely accepted. Of course, boarding passes and tickets have been there for some time.
But with iOS 15, you can put your driver’s license in your Apple Wallet. Or your company keycard.
It’s only in certain states at first, and only in the U.S., but that will change. And the TSA is working on accepting it at U.S. airports.
It’s only for Apple iPhones with the U1 chip in them, that’s iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, and iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.
One day, please, Apple, it will include passports, too—which is the one item I always dread leaving behind.
6. Don’t Leave Stuff Behind
Talking about leaving things behind, Apple is about to help you not do that. It will work so that when you leave your iPad or AirTag and go off without it, you’ll get a notification.
I know several people for whom this is going to be a complete godsend. It’ll work with AirPods, too. Life is complicated enough already, without constantly having to worry about what you’ve forgotten. This feature is enough on its own to make me upgrade to iOS 15 as soon as possible.
7. Live Text
This is a biggie. I’ve tried to keep this round-up to things you won’t have found anywhere else, but I couldn’t leave this out.
You know how frustrating it is when you see text in a file that you can’t read? Previously, you’d have needed something like an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) program to be able to decipher what was in it in a useful way.
Live Text is slightly magical, letting you copy and paste text found in photographs or seen through the camera’s viewfinder.
I know, I know, Google has had Google Lens for some time, but I’m betting this will be just as special.
Apple’s search engine for the images in the Photos app was already strong but this takes it to another level.
A new Live Text button lets you know that the camera, for example, has seen text it can do something with, and then you can, for instance, turn handwriting on a pad into printed text. Cool.
