Hands-on with iOS 14.2 RC top changes and features [Video] - 9to5Mac

ios.indah.link

Yesterday Apple issued the iOS 14.2 Release Candidate (GM) to developers, signifying that a public-facing release is not too far behind. iOS 14.2 RC includes over 100 new emoji characters, features eight beautiful new wallpapers, Shazam music recognition CC toggle, a redesigned AirPlay 2 interface, and much more. This iOS 14.2 release also fixes the annoying “A new iOS update is now available” message that appears upon each unlock for those on the previous beta. Watch our hands-on video as we explore iOS 14.2 top changes and features.

What’s new in iOS 14.2 RC?

Note: It looks as if Apple is replacing the term “GM Seed” for near-final versions of its software with “Release Candidate,” so we will refer to this as the iOS 14.2 (RC) Release Candidate.

  • A fix for the annoying “A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 14 beta” message that occurred with each unlock.
  • Eight beautiful new wallpapers in light and dark versions
  • Hundreds of new emoji characters
  • A fix for HDR videos thumbnails exported from Final Cut Pro X
  • Redesigned AirPlay 2 interface
  • Updated now playing controls and AirPlay 2 interface on the Lock screen
  • Redesigned AirPlay 2 controls in Control Center
  • New animation lets you see if other AirPlay 2 devices are active on your network
  • Source icon indicator for music, podcasts, etc.
  • Updated AirPlay pop-over

  • Shazam music recognition CC toggle
  • Watch app with new Apple Watch Solo Loop app icon
  • ‘Reduce Loud Sounds’ is now renamed ‘Headphone Safety’ in Settings
  • Apple Card users now have ‘Yearly activity’ tab in the Wallet app
  • Ask Siri to stop playing music on HomePod
  • Intercom support in Home app and via Siri

There are many takeaways from the iOS 14.2 Release Candidate. If you’re coming from the previous iOS 14.2 beta, you’ll be happy to know that the annoying “A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 14 beta” that occurred every time you unlocked your iPhone has been fixed with this update. That alone is enough to warrant updating in my opinion.

One of the biggest new features found in iOS 14.2 is the revamped AirPlay 2 interface in Control Center. You’ll now find much bigger album artwork in Control Center for now-playing media. You’ll also find an icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the album artwork denoting the source of the media.

In addition to these changes, both Control Center and the Lock screen will now present suggested media when nothing is playing. On the Lock screen, you’ll need to have headphones connected before suggested media is presented.

There’s also a handy new AirPlay 2 pop-over for accessing other AirPlay 2-compatible devices on your network, including a brand new animation that occurs when media is currently playing on those devices. This pop-over is accessible from anywhere AirPlay 2 devices can be selected, such as the Lock screen, Control Center, Music app, etc.

There is also a brand new Shazam toggle that can be added to Control Center. This toggle allows you to inconspicuously learn details about songs playing in your environment without needing to invoke Siri.

Arguably the two biggest new features in iOS 14.2 are the eight new wallpapers, and the 100+ new emoji characters. The new wallpapers stand out, because they are full screen wallpapers that are less abstract than Apple wallpapers in the recent past. There are also darker versions of the eight new wallpapers included for when users switch to Dark mode.

The new emojis include all sorts of new additions, such as the ninja, disguise face, boomerang, and many more. I recommend using the iOS 14 emoji search feature to find new favorites.

iOS 14.2 also brings about the new Intercom functionality demonstrated alongside the unveiling of the HomePod mini at Apple’s iPhone 12 event. You’ll find a new Intercom button in the upper-right hand corner of the Home app that can be used to communicate with HomePods in the various locations of your house. Users can also use Siri to invoke the new Intercom feature as a means to communicate with household members.

9to5mac’s take

iOS 14.2 is a huge release that brings forth all of the features listed here, and many additional changes, bug fixes, and improvements. What’s your favorite new addition in iOS 14.2? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts.

Upgrade To iOS 14.2 GM To Get Rid Of Beta Update Notification - Forbes

ios.indah.link

You've been seeing it for days, maybe all week: "A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 14 beta." Some Public Beta users were even seeing it before iOS 14.2 Public Beta 4. Thankfully, Apple has released the iOS 14.2 Golden Master (GM) release to all beta testers ahead of next week's public release. This GM release has a fix for the pernicious (and inaccurate) notification.

What's Fixed

There are no official release notes for iOS 14.2 as of yet, that'll come next week when it's released to the public. That doesn't mean that we don't know what's in iOS 14.2.

Of course, the big fix for beta users is that the constant notification to update iOS 14.2 no longer appears. But there are other fixes in this release for everyone else.

  • Apps appear in the right order on your Home Screen dock
  • The Camera app viewfinder isn't black when launched
  • The Lock Screen keypad registers all touches
  • Reminders no longer default to past dates
  • The Photos widget displays content again
  • The Weather widget displays the high temperature in your selected unit and doesn't default to Celsius
  • You'll no longer see incorrect rain predictions for the next hour
  • Voice Memos recordings won't be interrupted by incoming calls
  • Video playback in the Netflix app works properly
  • Asking Siri to send or receive Apple Cash works again
  • The Apple Watch app won't unexpectedly close after being opened
  • GPS routes and Health data from your Apple Watch's Workout app sync properly with your iPhone
  • Audio won't be labeled as “Not Playing" in the CarPlay Dashboard
  • Devices charge wirelessly as expected
  • Exposure Notifications won't be disabled when restoring your iPhone from iCloud Backup or transferring data to a new iPhone using iPhone Migration

What's New

Here's everything that we've seen so far in the iOS 14.2 public beta.

  • 100+ new emoji! There are animals, food, faces, household objects, and musical instruments. There are also a large amount of gender-inclusive emoji, a very welcome addition.
  • As reported last week, there are eight new wallpapers with light and dark mode versions (but no exclusive iPhone 12 wallpapers without actually having the new device).
  • If you have an iPhone 12 Pro or are getting a 12 Pro Max, the Magnifier app can now use the LiDAR sensor to detect nearby people and report their distance.
  • There's now support for iPhone 12 Leather Sleeve with MagSafe. My best guess is that this throttles voltage a bit so that it doesn't leave a mark on the sleeve.
  • Battery charging for AirPods has been optimized to slow the rate of battery aging.
  • You'll now get a headphone audio level notification when your current audio level could damage your hearing.
  • Getting a new HomePod mini? There are new AirPlay controls to stream entertainment throughout your home.
  • Speaking of HomePods, you'll be able to use them as intercoms from your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and CarPlay with this update.
  • You can now connect you HomePod to your Apple TV 4K for stereo, surround sound, and Dolby Atmos audio.
  • This release gives you the option to provide statistics about Exposure Notifications, without identifying you, to participating public health authorities.

What's Next?

iOS 14.2 will be released next week. This GM will be loaded onto those iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max devices we'll be pre-ordering next Friday and getting in our hands the Friday after that.

One interesting note, while I'd warned against participating in the Public Beta Program before getting a new iPhone 12, it seems that Apple has been much quicker on the draw with hardware profiles for their new devices. iPhone 12 and 12 Pro profiles were released last Friday, the day that the devices were released.

This meant that all you had to do to load your iOS 14.2 Public Beta backup onto your new iPhone 12 was set the new device up without using any backups, enroll it in the beta program to get the hardware profile, then reset your device and set up your iPhone 12 like you usually would. Even if you reset your iPhone, the iOS that's last loaded on the device will remain.

If you're getting an iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 12 Pro Max in the next couple of weeks and don't want to bother with any of that then the iOS 14.2 GM would be a great place to hop off. Just go to Settings > General > Profile and delete your beta configuration profile.

With iOS 14.2 being released this week, it's a good bet that we'll see iOS 14.3 either later this week or early in the second week of November. I doubt we'll see anything this Tuesday, since that's Election Day in the U.S. and many companies are giving folks extra time away from work to vote.

No matter what happens, I'll be back as soon as the next beta kicks off! Until then, enjoy your notification-free iPhone!

apple has added a secret button to the iPhone that can trigger a variety of gestures, tasks, and accessibility shortcuts. the little-known feature, which was included in the latest iOS update (iOS 14), is known as ‘back tap’. the feature lets users double or triple tap the back of the iPhone case to trigger a shortcut without engaging with the device’s touchscreen. ‘back tap’ can be enabled through iPhone’s settings app by selecting ‘accessibility’ > ‘touch’ > ‘back tap’. users can then choose which function they wish this action to activate, with system, accessibility, and scroll gesture options all possible.

SpaceX's Official Starlink App Now Available On Android & iOS - Screen Rant

ios.indah.link

SpaceX's official Starlink app is now ready to serve Android and iOS users with access to tools that aid in setting up the best internet connection possible. The app also includes a slew of troubleshooting options and internet speed information, among other features. SpaceX founder Elon Musk previously revealed that the company has been busy building over a hundred Starlink satellites on a monthly basis.

The project started back in 2015 and has managed to deploy over 800 satellites ever since. These satellites are being launched into low Earth orbit to provide a broader range of internet access to a global market, and are expected to especially be useful to those in rural areas where internet on Earth is often hard to come by. SpaceX is initially targeting north American consumers via a public beta that provides them with a taste of this futuristic broadband service, but at a steep price.

With Starlink's “Better Than Nothing Beta” program under way, SpaceX is making its eponymous app publicly available for smartphone users running at least Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or iOS 11 on iPhone. The App Store page listing describes it as a sort of companion for Starlink customers to help them in setting up the necessary hardware and to properly configure the internet connection. Of course, most of the app's functions require the smartphone to be connected to the terminal included in the $499 Starlink kit, so users won't be able to test them out until a working connection is established.

advertising

What Else Does The Starlink App Do?

Aside from configuring Starlink internet connectivity, the app can also help subscribers make the most out of the service's download speed. Another feature is that the app can utilize a smartphone's camera to check for obstructions that might be interfering with its internet service. Obstructions will be highlighted through the use of a compass displayed in the app. In addition, it will also help users determine the best possible spots to setup the Starlink terminal to ensure optimal performance.

Once connected to the Starlink's broadband network, users can also test their internet speed in the app. Likewise, if the Starlink's internet connection isn't working properly, the app also gives users access to troubleshooting tools, such as the ability to reboot the connection or contact customer service. The Starlink service might only be available in the northern hemisphere for now, but Musk is planning to extend its reach globally within the next two years. It will be interesting to see if this broader form of connectivity becomes one of the building blocks for the future of eSports and online gaming, given that the speed SpaceX is predicting is already looking promising for gamers.

Apple releases iOS 14.2 GM with fix for ‘new iOS update’ alert and more - 9to5Mac

ios.indah.link

Apple is releasing iOS 14.2 GM to developer beta testers today, and to public beta testers. Notably, today’s new iOS 14.2 GM should bring a fix for the erroneous “A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 14 beta” notification that many users are seeing right now.

iOS 14.2 GM is rolling out now and can be found in the Settings application. The release of this beta is particularly notable given the notification about a non-existent update many users have been seeing for the past 24 hours.

This isn’t the first time a bug like this has happened. In fact, something similar happened during the iOS 12 beta period in 2018. Essentially, Apple hardcodes the expiration of beta versions of iOS into the springboard. Once that date rolls around, the springboard will automatically display the popup warning repeatedly until an update is installed.

Elsewhere, iOS 14.2 brings revamped now playing controls to the lock screen alongside redesigned AirPlay 2 controls in Control Center. Another one of the new changes in iOS 14.2 is a brand new Shazam toggle that can be added to Control Center.

To add the new Shazam music recognition toggle to Control Center, first make sure you’re running the developer beta of iOS 14.2, which is rolling out today. Then, open the Settings app, choose “Control Center,” then look for Shazam beneath the “More Controls” header. You can then add the Shazam toggle and rearrange it as you see fit.

iOS 14.2 also includes a variety of new wallpapers, which can see and download in our full post right here.

If you spot any changes in iOS 14.2 GM, or the other new betas from Apple today, let us know in the comments below or on Twitter @9to5Mac.

iOS 14.2 includes the following improvements for your iPhone:

  • Over 100 new emoji, including animals, food, faces, household objects, musical instruments, gender-inclusive emoji, and more
  • Eight new wallpapers in both light and dark mode versions
  • Magnifier can detect people nearby, and report their distance using the LiDAR sensor included in iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • Support for iPhone 12 Leather Sleeve with MagSafe
  • Optimized battery charging for AirPods to slow the rate of battery aging by reducing the time your AirPods spends fully charged
  • Headphone audio level notifications to alert you when audio level could impact your hearing
  • New AirPlay controls to stream entertainment throughout your home
  • Intercom support with HomePod and HomePod mini using iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and CarPlay
  • Ability to connect HomePod to Apple TV 4K for stereo, surround sound, and Dolby Atmos audio
  • Option to provide statistics about Exposure Notifications, without identifying you, to participating Public Health Authorities

This release also fixes the following issues:

  • Apps could be out of order on the Home Screen dock
  • Camera viewfinder may appear black when launched
  • The keyboard on the Lock Screen could miss touches when trying to enter the passcode
  • Reminders could default to times in the past
  • Photos widget may not display content
  • Weather widget could display the high temperature in Celsius when set to Fahrenheit
  • Next-hour precipitation chart description in Weather could incorrectly indicate when precipitation stops
  • Voice Memos recordings are interrupted by incoming calls
  • The screen could be black during Netflix video playback
  • Apple Cash could fail to send or receive money when asked via Siri
  • Apple Watch app may unexpectedly close when opened
  • Workout GPS routes or Health data are prevented from syncing between Apple Watch and iPhone for some users
  • Audio is incorrectly labeled as “Not PlayingĂą€ in the CarPlay Dashboard
  • Devices could be prevented from charging wirelessly
  • Exposure Notifications is disabled when restoring iPhone from iCloud Backup or transferring data to a new iPhone using iPhone Migration

iOS 14 beta bug is driving iPhone and iPad users insane - BGR

ios.indah.link
  • iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 beta users are experiencing a bug that causes a pop-up to appear every time they unlock their iPhone or iPad telling them that an update is available.
  • The bug is affecting countless iPhone and iPad users, but Apple has yet to release a fix.
  • If you need a temporary fix for the bug, just set the date a few days earlier on your device.

When you sign up to take part in a software beta, you have to expect that there will be issues along the way. After all, betas are unfinished by definition, and the whole point of letting users have access to the software early is to iron out the kinks before launch. This is true of iOS betas as well, and Apple offers an explicit notification before you install a beta to remind you to back up your data and to warn you that the software might have bugs.

The iOS 14 beta, which ended when the software launched in September, was one of the most placid beta programs Apple has ever run. There were occasional hiccups here and there, but having installed the public beta myself, I can’t think of a single bug that caused me any stress during the beta period. Unfortunately, the insanely annoying bug that some users might have been dreading has finally appeared, and it’s driving people crazy.

If you installed the iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 beta on your iPhone or your iPad (even if you’ve since removed it), chances are that you’ve seen the following message pop up on your device repeatedly over the last day or so:

A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 14 beta.

As 9to5Mac notes, users have been complaining about this bug throughout the week, but it appears to have become even more widespread as of Thursday night. For me, it started on my iPhone 11 last night, and now every time that I unlock my phone, the pop-up appears on my screen and I can’t do anything until I close it. It happens literally every time, and there doesn’t appear to be an easy fix, at least not that I’ve found.

A similar issue occurred two years ago with iOS 12, which app developer Guilherme Rambo explained on Twitter:

It’s unclear if this bug is manifesting in the same way, but it looks and behaves virtually identically to the iOS 12 bug. The bad news is that if you are experiencing this issue, your only real course of action is to wait for Apple to seed a new update. If you’re looking for a temporary fix, though, you can go to Settings > Date & Time, turn off the Set Automatically toggle, and go back to October 26th. This worked for me, and I’ll probably live on October 26th like Groundhog Day until Apple provides us with a permanent fix for this bug.

Jacob started covering video games and technology in college as a hobby, but it quickly became clear to him that this was what he wanted to do for a living. He currently resides in New York writing for BGR. His previously published work can be found on TechHive, VentureBeat and Game Rant.

'A New iOS Update is Now Available' Popping Up Repeatedly in iOS 14 Beta [Update] - MacRumors

ios.indah.link

Many users running iOS 14 beta are reporting that they are seeing a dialog box pop up repeatedly asking them to update from the latest ‌iOS 14‌ beta.

Threads in our forums, Reddit, and Twitter are reporting the issue. The dialog has been appearing for a few days now, but as of tonight has started appearing more frequently, every time an iPhone is unlocked. There's been further discussion in our iOS 14.2 Beta 4 thread.

Getting the notification to update my iOS every time I unlock my ‌iPhone‌.
This issue was present like 5 years ago with one beta, the only way to stop it was by Apple having to push an emergency update, I remember it was the only time I was updating ‌iPhone‌ in the morning (in the EU) as they pushed it late night in Cali.

Previous betas have reportedly seen the same issue, according to postings in our forum.

Update: Some have mentioned that moving the iOS date back will prevent it from happening, though that has other consequences so we don't recommend it.

How to transfer data to a new iPhone if you're on a beta - iMore

ios.indah.link

iPhone 12 Pro Pacific BlueSource: Joseph Keller / iMore

If you're planning on getting a new iPhone on launch day, you might run into a particular issue if your current iPhone has been on the iOS beta track for a bit. As has happened with the iPhone 11 in 2019 and the iPhone 12 in 2020, Apple's flagship iPhones are launching with versions of iOS that are older than what is currently in beta. For instance, the iPhone 12 ships with iOS 14.1, while the beta version of iOS at launch was iOS 14.2. So if you've been updating your current iPhone to the latest beta, restoring from backup to a new iPhone might be a bit of a chore.

The good news with the iOS 14 beta cycle versus the iOS 13 cycle is that, with iOS 14, there was a Golden Master and actual public release of iOS 14.0 before Apple moved on to 14.2, so there was a logical jumping-off point if you wanted to restore your new iPhone from a backup without a rigmarole.

Save big on these VPN services ahead of Black Friday

If, however, you stayed on the beta cycle until you had a new iPhone 12 in hand, you'll need to follow these steps, too.

Here's what you'll need to do to transfer data to a new iPhone from a backup of a phone on a newer iOS beta.

The problem

So, you've been following along the iOS beta cycle since WWDC. You even put the iOS beta on your primary iPhone (but who would do such a thing?) And when the new version of iOS that you'd been testing all summer was finally released to the public, you considered getting off the train but ultimately decided against it.

But now you're getting a new iPhone, and have continued updating to the latest beta version of iOS. The beta version on your old iPhone is newer than the release version on your new iPhone. And you want to restore from a backup, but old versions of iOS can't be restored from backups of new versions of iOS. So what do you do?

Well, here's what you do.

The solution

Unfortunately, the answer to this problem is fairly convoluted and depends on whether or not Apple releases the current beta versions of iOS for the brand new iPhones.

As I see it, there are two possible scenarios.

Scenario 1: Apple doesn't release a beta

This is actually the simplest one. If Apple doesn't release a beta version of iOS for its new phones, then that's that. You can either set up your new iPhone as a new device, forego restoring from a backup, and update to the new version of iOS when it releases to the public, and maybe restore from a backup then.

Or you could hang on to your old iPhone that's running the updated beta and use that until the official release of the new version of iOS to the public, at which point you can then set up your new iPhone. You'd still need to set up your new iPhone as a new device, update it, then restore it, but you wouldn't also need to install a beta profile on it, too.

Scenario 2: Apple releases a beta on iPhone launch day

This is more complicated, but it's how Apple has done things in the past. At some point on iPhone launch day, Apple should release a version of whatever the current iOS beta is for its new iPhone lineup. This should be available to both developer and public beta users, but you'll have to play it by ear.

Whatever the case may be, to upgrade your new iPhone to the beta, you'll need to activate it as a new iPhone first. Once you've set it up, enroll it in either the developer or public beta program (you'll need a developer account to do the former). Once you've done that, you can download the beta over-the-air as soon as it's available.

After the upgrade: Erasing your iPhone

Assuming Apple releases an iOS beta for the new iPhones, once you've upgraded your new phone to it, you'll want to erase it if you plan to restore a backup from your previous iPhone. A trip to Settings easily accomplishes that.

How to wipe all personal data and erase your iPhone and iPad

Restoring your iPhone from a backup

So, to recap: you've set up your new iPhone, updated it to the latest iOS beta, and now you've erased all of it. Once erased, your iPhone will still be on the iOS beta. Now you can restore it from an iOS beta backup of your older iPhone.

How to restore your iPhone or iPad from a backup

Once restored, your new iPhone will be on the iOS beta, and you can update it to the release version of iOS when it launches to the general iPhone-owning public.

Questions?

If you have any questions about how to transfer data to a new iPhone from a backup of a newer version of iOS, feel free to ask them in the comments.

iOS 14 changes the iPhone's home screen.

James Martin/CNET

Shortly before the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro were officially available, Apple released iOS 14.1, the same version of its mobile software that ships on the latest crop of iPhones. The bug-fixing update enhances all the new features and capabilities iOS 14 brings to its iPhone and iPad lineup. (Here's the full device compatibility list.)

We've been using iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 and have found plenty of tweaks, settings and tools that are sure to change how you use your current iPhone and iPad. For example, you can completely personalize your iPhone's home screen by creating custom app icons and placing new widgets wherever you want. For its part, a new Scribble feature in the iPad update now lets you use the Apple Pencil ($125 at Amazon) to write in any text field, and the tablet will convert it to text, instead of always pulling up the keyboard. And that's just the beginning.

Here are the best tips and tricks we've discovered for iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. We'll frequently update this post, so check back for more fantastic tips.

App Library is the iPhone's new app drawer.

1. Check out the new home screen features

The iPhone gained an app drawer-like feature called App Library, which acts as a warehouse to store all of the apps you don't regularly use. You can access the App Library by swiping from right to left on your screen past all of your current home screens. Another first for the iPhone is the ability to place widgets on the home screen. Apple provided developers with the tools to create a new style of widget that's sure to make your Android friends jealous. We go into more detail about the home screen changes here

2. Create a custom Smart Stack widget

Speaking of widgets, you're not locked into using Apple's curated Smart Stack widget. You can create your own stack of widgets using the same technique you'd use to create an app folder. Seriously, it takes longer to decide which widgets you can include than it does to create it.

Just keep stacking widgets until you're happy.

3. Make your own app icons

Apple also added new features to its Shortcuts app, with the most popular addition being the ability to create your own app icons and fully customize the look of your phone. So instead of the Apple Mail app icon, you can download an icon that replaces it with a picture of a cute cat or the Gmail icon and use that to launch the app. The process is somewhat tedious, but if you want a home screen that's unlike any other, it's well worth your time.

Custom icons are all the rage right now.

4. Use apps without installing them, thanks to App Clips

Think of App Clips as miniature apps that only show you a portion of what the full app can do. For example, a Yelp App Clip could show you business hours and the menu for a specific restaurant and nothing more. Want to try one? Open the Apple Maps app on your iPhone, search for Panera Bread, tap on a location and then select Order Food. Pretty cool, right? After using an App Clip, you can access it again in the App Library in the recently added folder.

5. Picture-in-Picture comes to the iPhone

You're no longer forced to decide whether you want to watch a Twitch stream or browse Reddit on your iPhone. With iOS 14, you can do both at the same time now that Apple has added picture-in-picture mode to the iPhone. The iPad has had this feature for a couple of years now, so it's nice to see the iPhone get it as well. When you start watching a video you only need to leave the app and go back to the home screen to trigger PiP. There are some apps, like YouTube, that don't support the feature. You can view a list of all the apps installed on your phone that support it by going to Settings > General > Picture in Picture. Read more about picture-in-picture to get a better idea of when and where it works.

6. Deleting apps can be confusing now

With the addition of the App Library, there's now an extra step when it comes to deleting an app from your phone and for long-time iPhone users, it's not at all straightforward. But it doesn't have to be too confusing; we walk you through the new steps

7. Ditch Apple Mail and Safari

Apple added the ability to delete its own apps from your iPhone a few years ago, but you still couldn't set apps like Gmail or Outlook as your default email app. Now you can, but Apple has limited this new feature to only the email and web browsers. It only takes a few taps to make the change, after which you won't have to deal with Apple's apps ever again.

8. AirPods Pro has a new audio feature

The iPhone and iPad aren't the only devices that received a big update. Apple's AirPods Pro also got a small firmware update that added a new feature called Spatial Audio. You'll, of course, need to use an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14 to use the feature. With both devices updated, whenever you're watching a video the sound will follow the movements of your head, adjusting with each twist and turn. CNET's David Carnoy described it as an "out-of-bud experience." And he's not wrong.

9. The iPad looks more like a Mac than ever

iPadOS 14 includes several new features and enhancements that bring its interface closer to looking and working like a Mac. Or is it the Mac that's starting to look like an iPad with MacOS Big Sur? Either way, you'll want to learn all you can about the new iPad features in iPadOS 14

10. Hidden features are the best features

Not to be left out, there are several hidden features in iOS 14 that do some truly amazing things. For instance, a new back tap feature lets you tap on the back of your phone two or three times, triggering a task like taking a screenshot or launching an app. We've found a total of nine hidden features worth sharing with you so far and plan to keep adding to the list.

11. New privacy features

Keeping your information private is one of Apple's main marketing points, and iOS 14 is going even further to help keep your information private. There are new location sharing settings that will limit whether an app sees your exact location or a more general area. There's also a new notification dot that will tell you when an app is using your phone's camera or mic, and finer controls over which photos an app has access to. Check out all of the new privacy features and how to use them.

You don't have to tell apps exactly where you are if you don't want to.

12. New camera tricks

There are several subtle but important new features in the Camera app. For example, when taking a photo at night, there's a new guide to remind you to keep still. You'll see crosshairs that show you where to keep the camera. There's also a new exposure adjustment dial, and you can snap multiple photos much quicker. Learn how to use and where to find the new features, complete with animated images.

iOS 14 makes is so you can take consecutive photos faster. There's less time from one photo to another.

13. Up your selfie game

Another new feature in the Camera app is a new setting for the front-facing camera that is sure to help your selfies shine. The new mirror mode forces the camera to act more like a, well, mirror, which can make it easier to make sure your shot is framed and lined up the way you want. We show you where to find the new setting

14. Still want more? We gotcha

As a bonus round, we've compiled a few more tips to do even more, like tag someone in a group conversation in the Messages app and use Apple's new Translate app to carry a conversation in two completely different languages. We walk you through those two tips, plus a few more of our favorite features

There's still plenty more to learn and figure out in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, so we're just getting started. Presumably, iOS 14 will be installed on the iPhone 12 when it arrives later this month.

Among Us (for iOS) Review - PCMag

ios.indah.link

Among Us first launched in 2018, but the suspenseful multiplayer party game truly took off in 2020. No one predicted that pandemic-induced social distancing would leave us all desperate for new ways to virtually interact with friends, including lying to them on spaceships. More than just the right game for the right moment, Among Us is a genuinely and immensely entertaining online and offline multiplayer game. It’s an Editors’ Choice award-winning iPhone game for anyone with a stomach for deception.

One Small Step

I played Among Us on an iPhone 11, but the game is also available on Android and PC. On mobile, you can play for free if you sit through an ad after each round. You can pay to remove ads and unlock cosmetics, such as pets that follow your character around. On PC, the game costs $4.99, but you start with more cosmetic items that you must pay for on mobile.

The game also supports online or in-person (if everyone connects to the same local network) crossplay, so everyone can play against each other regardless of platform. Matches typically end in less than 15 minutes, and with so many people playing, you can always find and jump into a new one. Among Us only works if you can easily find or gather large groups, so having an easy barrier to entry is key.

Set in an isolated spaceship, Among Us asks up to 10 players to work together as a crew to avoid getting picked off one by one…unless you’re the imposter picking them off. As a crew member, you must complete tasks while watching out for the suspicious imposter and building consensus for an accusation. As the imposter, you must murder crew members while staying incognito and convincing survivors not to vote you off the ship and into the abyss. In other words, don’t be sus. Roles are randomly assigned and you should take what you’re given. If you purposefully disconnect too many times trying to get the role you want, you get locked out for a few minutes.

Similar Products

At times, Among Us reminded me of horror games like Friday the 13th, despite the cute and colorful characters. Among Us is part of a wonderful tradition of asymmetric party games about bluffing, deception, and paranoia. If you’ve played card games like Mafia or Werewolf, you’ll easily understand the importance of smart deduction and playing into or against mob rule. Recent Jackbox Party Pack games also dare friends to lie to each other in very similar ways.

Deep Space

Among Us elevates ideas you may have seen before with a clever and original execution. It makes the gameplay surrounding each murder engaging enough so that you’re not just twiddling your thumbs waiting to vote someone off. The spaceship repair busywork has some of Spaceteam's excellent, sci-fi, cooperative charm. Opening your map to find your next objective and figuring out the minigame required to complete it can take up so much of your attention that you won’t even notice an imposter sneaking up behind you, a distraction that seems very much intentional.

Among Us task

Some tasks may veer too far into traditional video game territory for casual players—quickly solving an unexplained puzzle recalls WarioWare—but they add depth that makes each session unique. They keep the game from feeling like a glorified minigame. One round you're attaching wires to restore power, the next you're blasting away pesky asteroids with the weapons system. Plus, the game never requires that much speed or precision. I never felt disadvantaged by using the touch screen instead of a mouse-and-keyboard control scheme. Even if you don’t find the imposter, the crew wins if everyone completes all their tasks.

Meanwhile, imposters have more than enough tools to carry out their dark deeds. As with any other stealth game, you should take the time to learn each map’s rooms and hallways, so you can skillfully navigate the environment and take out vulnerable stragglers. The biggest clue and the first question the group asks after a kill, is almost always “Where did it happen?” So, having a strong location-based alibi is key.

Imposters have other perks, too. You can sabotage equipment to force crew members to waste time fixing it, pretend to do fake tasks, and hide in or escape through vents so you don’t get seen next to a corpse. But your greatest talent is your own ability to lie, deny, and blame others if you get called out. Crew members can summon everyone to emergency meetings even before dead bodies get reported, so you always need to be ready to play innocent.

Among Us kill

Even dead players can lend a ghostly helping hand. While you can’t accuse anyone (since you already know who killed you) you can float through walls to help finish tasks faster. You can also chat privately with other ghosts to laugh about the mortals still struggling. Among Us draws huge audiences on video game live streaming services, and it’s because the game still entertains passive participants alongside active ones.

Mission Control

When you play physical party games in person, you and your friends can tweak rules however you like. Among Us gives you similar flexibility when creating your own public and private rooms. You can adjust values as granular as the number of imposters, the number and length of tasks, and even the movement speed. You can also practice against dummies offline to get a better feel for each map, as well as learn tasks and imposter skills.

Among Us prep

Unfortunately, Among Us has no built-in voice chat. Normally, I never want to talk to anyone when playing an online game, especially untrustworthy strangers. However, Among Us requires communication to function. By default, everyone types in the chat. That’s serviceable, but so much vital emotion and nuance and performance gets lost that the game is legitimately less fun. So, I highly recommend friends use a Discord server to talk to each other, since it’s still too dangerous to meet up in person. Just make sure to play honorably and not spoil the imposter's identity.

This next, more arguable flaw is less tangible, but still one worth considering. Having played other games about lying and manipulating social dynamics in addition to Among Us, I sincerely think they may be too stressful for some players. Even in a game, the pressure and paranoia of accusing and being accused can honestly raise anxiety. I enjoy the cerebral and thrilling tension, but I also get why others may feel differently.

Less fun are the saboteurs who aren’t supposed to be there. Like any popular multiplayer game, Among Us now has its fair share of cheaters and hackers, folks who spam the chat with political propaganda or links to their websites. This is a problem the developers at InnerSloth are thankfully addressing. InnerSloth canceled a sequel to invest more in this first game and keep up with the ballooning player base. That’s great because I did encounter some technical issues, such as sound not playing or my character loading into nothing but a black screen. Still, that roughness is also part of the game’s humble, working-class, sci-fi charm, as is the flat sketchy art style reminiscent of a Newgrounds cartoon.

John Carpenter Would Be Proud

Among Us doesn’t need any more exposure. Before we published this review, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez broke viewership records playing the game on Twitch...after some technical difficulties setting up voice chat. The game’s lingo has already seeped into broader online gamer culture, too. Among Us is more than just a fad, and its delightfully devious deception should earn this Editors’ Choice award-winning iPhone game a permanent spot in your party game rotation.
