iOS 15 Launch: This New Feature Transforms The Way You Upgrade Your iPhone - Forbes

Apple’s iOS 15 has been revealed, and it comes with a new feature that will transform the way you upgrade your iPhone. The new function in iOS 15 is something most iPhone users have wanted for a very long time—the ability to perform security updates without having to upgrade to the latest operating system.

Many people prefer to wait to update their iPhones, especially when Apple releases major upgrades, such as iOS 15 set to launch this Fall. That’s because new iPhone updates are often buggy, and the software can even be difficult for older iPhones to handle.

In iOS 15, that will all change: Apple has confirmed it will continue to issue security updates for iPhones running iOS 14, even if they don’t upgrade their devices to iOS 15 at all. This iOS 15 feature was spotted by MacRumors and is part of Apple’s iOS 15 Preview page.

Apple describes the feature: “iOS now offers a choice between two software update versions in the Settings app. You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 as soon as it’s released for the latest features and most complete set of security updates. Or continue on iOS 14 and still get important security updates until you’re ready to upgrade to the next major version.”

A great move for iPhone security

It’s a great move for iPhone security as before now, anyone who left their updates until later was putting their Apple device at risk.

It comes after Apple issued a number of emergency security updates this year—some so urgent that they were pushed out separately to iPhone features upgrades—to fix vulnerabilities that had often been exploited in the wild.

MORE FOR YOU

In the past, I have always advised people to update their iPhones to new software when security updates are included. A few bugs are a way better option than malicious hackers being able to take advantage of security weaknesses to compromise your iPhone.

But some people will always resist, and that’s understandable when since iOS 13, many Apple upgrades have been buggy. Recently, the iOS 14.6 update saw some users complain of battery drain (although my iPhone 12 Pro Max has been fine).

Apple is keeping iPhone users safe

This soon-to-launch iOS 15 feature has been a long time coming, and with it, Apple is helping to keep people safe. “This is a good move by Apple,” says Sean Wright, SME application security lead at Immersive Labs.

Wright thinks the iOS 15 move could help drive adoption of security updates, if people know they are staying secure while also avoiding any bugs or issues. “People may become more open to applying updates since they now have some choice, rather than updates essentially being forced upon them.”

I agree, and from iOS 15, my advice on iPhone updates will change. But one thing will remain the same: If it’s a security update, always apply it—and that will be the case for most iOS 14 upgrades until iOS 15 launches.
