Has there been an iOS 14.7-sized hole in your daily routine? Have you been checking back under Settings > General > Software Update day after day, seeing if a new iOS 14.7 Public Beta has been released? Well, your wait is finally over. iOS 14.7 Public Beta 3 has been released for Apple Beta Program participants today.
What Happened to 2?
The second beta build of iOS 14.7 was actually released several weeks ago to developers, right before WWDC. It was quickly pulled back after persistent cellular problems were discovered. Maybe because of the severity of the issue or maybe because of the timing of the beta release in relation to the first developer beta of iOS 15, the second beta build was never re-released or made available to public testers.
What's New?
All that said, there's really nothing new in iOS 14.7 Public Beta 3 that wasn't in Public Beta 1. According to the official release notes, there's nothing to report.
What's Fixed
Well, it's obvious that the cellular issue has been fixed in iOS 14.7 PB 3, otherwise Apple wouldn't release it. But since it was a bug discovered in a build that was almost immediately scrapped, it doesn't get a release note mention.
Of course, that doesn't mean there really isn't anything. As evidenced by the release notes for the iOS 14.6 release candidate, Apple is always working on something with these builds...even if they don't want to share that information.
MORE FOR YOU
As always, if you find a bug in the release candidate that snuck past the devs in Cupertino, report it with the Feedback app!
What's Next?
iOS 15 Public Beta 1. That's what's next. Given that we're already into the middle of June and the first public beta of iOS 15 has been promised for "sometime in July," you can bet that this opaque release will be all we get between now and when that's available.
An iOS 14.8 release is possible but probably not until after the first public beta build for iOS 15. After all, the general release of iOS 15 isn't until later this year. Apple will continue adding iOS 14 bug fixes and setting the stage for the new release in subsequent releases even after the Apple Beta Program has switched over to the new software. They could also choose to keep iOS 14.7 going until the first public iOS 15 release as a catch-all for anything that comes up (though that's less likely).
If you haven't yet, check out my guide for getting into the iOS 15 public beta.
Being a beta tester gives you the chance to test out future features and see what's coming before anyone else. Just keep in mind that betas don't have stability guarantees so your favorite app might not work or your device could stop working entirely. In fact, the first developer beta of iOS 15 has been plagued by major performance problems. If you rely on your device daily, you might want to wait until iOS 15.1.
In the meantime, iOS 14.7 will be with us for a while. Now that the cellular issue has been cleared up, we should (hopefully) see a return to weekly releases. When that happens, I'll be back with more iOS Public Beta news!
