The next software update for the iPhone is very nearly here. Read on for a handful of the coolest features—and there’s also a very neat update to how you can use Shazam. Read about that here.
1. AirTag update
If an AirTag is in Lost Mode, if someone finds it and has an iPhone or NFC-capable gadget to read contact details, specifically, your phone number. With this update You’ll be able to put an email address instead of a phone number, so if your AirTag is found, you can choose how the kind finder will re-unite you with your stuff.
Additionally, an NFC device will see only a partial phone number for the owner on an AirTag in Lost Mode.

2. Updating your iPhone out of beta
If you’ve used public beta versions before, you’ll know that one of the most annoying things is when you’ve had enough of the beta and want to go back to general release versions. Not only do you have to delete the beta profile, you have to go through the whole process of enrolling your iPhone again when there’s a new beta you want to try.
With iOS 14.6, you can upgrade to the release candidate without removing the beta.
In fact, there’s also an Also Available element in Software update which, right now, lets users choose to stick with iOS 14.6 or update to iOS 4.7, as that’s in public beta as well. Already!
3. Apple Card sharing
As Anthony Karcz has surmised on Forbes, here, the fact that Apple has said that Apple Card family sharing is coming soon made it seem very likely mean it could land with iOS 14.6. That’s now been confirmed by Apple in its notes about the update.
The idea of Apple Card sharing is that you can add extra users to your Apple Card, or merge accounts if a married couple had separate ones.
Users over 18 get a titanium card and are eligible for credit reporting as they use their card.
4. Podcasts App subscriptions
There are several updates to Podcasts coming, including the return of an option to mark all as played. Not to mention a way to remove downloads.
And you’ll be able to subscribe to channels, not just individual shows.
5. Apple Music update
This isn’t confirmed by any of Apple’s notes on what’s in iOS 14.6 but it looks like the introduction of lossless, hi-res lossless and Dolby Atmos audio files will come with iOS 14.6.
With these enhanced levels of listening quality will come Spatial Audio, which creates a kind of surround-sound effect.
All very exciting, though it needs the right equipment to make the most of it. AirPods Pro, for instance, can handle Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos but not lossless. That’s because the music is played from iPhone to AirPods Pro via Bluetooth, which can’t manage lossless.
Apple has just released more details of what AirPods Max will do—read full details here.
Though it’s not on the same scale as iOS 14.5, this next update has other stuff, too. Such as the update of the icon for the Apple TV Siri remote, to coincide with the release of the new model for Apple TV. Or the capability for Voice Control users to unlock the iPhone with their voice after the phone has restarted.
And fixes for issues such as Unlock with Apple Watch, which will now work again after using Lock iPhone on Apple Watch.
When’s it coming?
It’s very nearly here and though no date has yet been announced, I’d say it’s likely sometime in the coming week, perhaps on Tuesday, May 25 or Thursday, May 27.
