Apple iOS 14.5: Dazzling New iPhone Upgrade’s Last Secrets Are Out - Forbes

Apple iOS 14.5 will be released in two or three days, maximum. This is great news as the update offers way more improvements and new features than is usual at this stage in the release cycle.

The wait is, finally, almost over and the general release will happen on Tuesday, April 27 or, just possibly, Monday, April 26—but Apple is fond of Tuesday releases.

Either way, it is going to be great.

There are even a couple of neat new features in this final release candidate. Nothing to compare to the marquee elements, like being able to unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch when you are wearing a mask. Or any of the 11 cool new ways the next software is going to be exceptional.

Here, the new elements are more modest. Like something in the iPad version, iPadOS 14.5, which will add a neat privacy feature. The current iPad, iPad Air and most recent iPad Pro—in other words, there’s no reference to the new iPad Pro announced days ago which is available in late May—will all gain a new feature when they’re in the Smart Folio.

With this update, closing the Smart Folio will automatically mute the microphone on the tablet. As Apple says, “To avoid unnecessarily recording the muted signal, the default behavior is to interrupt an audio session that is using the built-in microphone when the Smart Folio is closed. You can opt out of the playback interruption when the Smart Folio is closed… allowing the audio session to continue playing uninterrupted while microphone input remains muted.”

Siri has gained updated dialogs for app selection when it comes to Music, Podcasts and Audiobooks requests.

The final beta indicates that other issues have been resolved, such as the new battery health reporting system for iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, itself a cool new feature, is now in tip-top condition (like the phone’s battery).

Oh, and if you thought iOS 14.5 was going to be the end of the cycle, think again. Apple has already seeded iOS 14.6 to developers, with a neat extra feature.

Apple iOS 14.5 is now set, there’ll be no more changes, though this doesn’t rule out a quick put-right follow-up if it’s found to create new problems. But, generally, it’s box fresh and ready to go. Roll on next week.
