The latest iOS update aims to fix a crucial issue: exposure notifications. And this update is designed to help older phones, such as the iPhone 6. Here are full details and how to get it.
Exposure Notifications
Apple and Google created a system last year which enables phones to spot when users spend time near each other. It’s a smart system which means that your phone exchanges a Bluetooth token with another phone when the two are in close contact for more than a short time.
Then, if the owner of one of the phones test positive for Covid-19, the other owner’s phone gets a notification that they’ve been near to someone with the virus.
It doesn’t tell you who that person was, or when it happened as both Apple and Google were insistent on preserving users’ privacy.
All well and good but when the system launched, it came under a lot of scrutiny because not every phone was compatible. In Apple’s case, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users were left out, and they weren’t happy.
So, last month, Apple released an update to iOS 12, version 12.5, which enables the iPhone 6 to work with exposure notifications. This update relates to fixing an issue with that update.
Note that many health authorities’ apps still require iOS 13 or iOS 14, but that’s outside Apple’s control, obviously.

Who can get it?
This update works with the following devices (note that it includes iPads, as iOS 12 predates the separate iPadOS software).
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
iPad Air (first-generation)
iPad mini second-generation
iPad mini third-generation
iPod touch sixth-generation
How to get it
It’s just become available to download on those devices. To get it, simply go to the Settings app, select General, then Software Update. Choose Download and Install, and you’ll soon be up to speed.
What’s in the update?
This is a very specific update. It is dealing with just one issue, the exposure notifications tracking capability that was introduced in iOS 12.5.
Apple says: “This update fixes an issue where Exposure Notifications could incorrectly display logging profile language.”
That’s all we know, but if you value having Exposure Notifications then fixing any issues is worth considering.
