If you've been wondering just what Apple was going to squeeze out of another week of Public Beta Testing for iOS 14.3, wonder no more. The final version that will be released to the public next week is now available for download ahead of general release.
Fitness+ and AirPods Pro Max
As speculated previously the golden master of iOS 14.3 brings with it compatibility for Apple's just released AirPods Pro Max and the new on-demand workout subscription Fitness+. The former will start arriving on doorsteps next Tuesday and the later launches next Monday. Based on that timing, I'd expect iOS 14.3 to be released to the public sometime tomorrow or Friday.
What New?
In addition to the two new Apple products, there are actually quite a few updates that come with iOS 14.3, including support for Apple ProRAW (which allows you to manipulate all the components of an image after you've taken it) and new Shortcut app behavior that lets you create a customized icon for an app without having to open the Shortcuts app itself.
Other tidbits (culled from the initial beta release) include:
- The Home app now lets you update your HomeKit-enabled hardware without having to open the third-party app.
- Ecosia, the eco-friendly search engine, is now an option in Safari
- If you're also beta testing watchOS 7.2, you'll now see Cardio Fitness notifications that warn you when your cardio fitness drops low enough to adversely affect your VO2 max.
- App Clips can now be launched by scanning a QR code with the camera.
- Air quality health recommendations are now offered for some regions including the US, UK, Germany, India, and Mexico.
- Third-party apps are now offered during setup in certain countries to comply with antitrust laws.
What's Fixed?
There honestly weren't very many bugs in this release. At least, there weren't very many in the official release notes. The thing to keep in mind is that there will be a separate set of release notes for the public release once it's widely available.
MORE FOR YOU
What's Next?
As I said up top, iOS 14.3 will be available to the general public sometime in the next four days. Fitness+ is part of the Health app and, even though it's not currently visible, you'll need to have the updated OS to be able to access the workouts that you've paid for (if you have a top tier Apple One plan).
If you're expecting delivery of AirPods Pro Max next week, you'll have to upgrade your iOS device in order to pair the new over-the-ear headphones (more about those in the coming weeks).
With iOS 14.3 out in the wild, we'll likely see the iOS 14.4 Public Beta start next week or the week after. With Christmas and New Years right around the corner, it's likely this next beta cycle will be a light one, possibly focused on pushing out Apple's oft-rumored, but never materialized AirTag finder devices.
Whatever happens, I'll be back next week!
