Hot on the heels of last week's Public Beta release, participants in the Apple Public Beta Program can now download Public Beta 7. And, while I know I told you not to expect anything new from the rest of the releases last week, we got a little surprise this week. New wallpapers!
Let's see what else the beta has in store for us, shall we?
What's Fixed
Apple's official release notes are light this week. Really light. That means that we're getting close to the end, but it also means that the bugs that remain are the super persistent ones. In fact, there's only two non-developer fixes this week:
- In Mail, your signature is no longer duplicated if you start a draft and then reopen it.
- The weather widget now knows where you are but only if you've enabled Always location access. It no longer has always-on access to your location if you've shut that off.
That's it! Granted, the weather widget has been a glowing white hot ball of inconsistency since the iOS 14 beta launched, so it's good to see it's almost completely taken care of (there's still one weather widget bug to be fixed).
What's Broken
Even though we might be only a couple of weeks away from a public release of iOS 14, there are still some persistent known issues that the developers in Cupertino need to work out. Most of these are the same as last week's list and have been here since Public Beta 1. Say hello to the stubborn ones.
- Unless you're also beta testing macOS Big Sur on your Mac, you won't be able to sync your iOS 14 device.
- Fonts in your third-party apps may be wonky if they haven't started using the APIs introduced in iOS 13.
- Spotlight might not appear as expected. Restart your device to get it back to normal.
- After updating, your Map user data such as Favorites, Collections, and Recents won't sync to devices running earlier versions of iOS and iPadOS.
- Ah, widgets. If you've given them access to "Selected Photos" you might get a notification each time it runs. You still can't resize existing widgets. The weather widget might still show up as blank but you should be able to tap to reset it. Oh, and if you're running an older beta and jump to beta 6? You might see some widgets disappear altogether.
These are the bugs that Apple are currently reporting and working on. That doesn't mean it's all of the bugs! As a Public Beta Program participant, you'll need to make sure you're finding and reporting them using the Feedback app.
What's New
Hey, Apple heard that you liked Dark Mode wallpapers, so it added some new ones for you in iOS 14 Public Beta 7!
If you're a fan of the rainbow stripe wallpaper, but want it to switch to black in Dark Mode, these new wallpapers will do just that. Personally, I would've preferred a gradient, where there was a pop of the original color that faded to black, but that's considerably more work and requires a graphic designer to create the new wallpaper. The return on investment might not be all that high when you can achieve a similar effect by, y'know, just turning off the color.
And that's it! It's fun getting little UI tweaks like this late in the beta cycle, but I wouldn't expect much else between now and the end of September.
What's Next
Given the short bug list, I suspect that the iOS 14 Public Beta cycle is getting ready to wrap up for the first big release. Most of the remaining issues on the list are really only problems for beta testers.
Widgets are a huge deal, so I don't think we'll see iOS 14 released while it's still throwing notification errors or they're showing up blank. As long as those widget errors hang around, don't expect Apple to release iOS 14 to the public. However, once they do next week or the week after, it's a good bet that public release will be right behind. Then it's on to iOS 14.1!
This was a late day release for Public Beta participants, so, if you have automatic updates enabled, you might already have the latest beta installed. If not, make sure your iPhone is charged up and head over to Settings > General > Software Update and start downloading!
I'll see you next week for iOS 14 Public Beta 8.
