Apple confirmed an iOS 14 security move that should help to make iPhone apps safer.
Apple’s iOS 14 is coming to iPhones and iPads very soon, along with a bunch of cool new features—many of which are focused on your security and privacy. Now, Apple has confirmed a new move that will help make apps more secure and less prone to fraud, as long as app developers make use of it.
The new App Attest API in iOS 14 is part of Apple’s DeviceCheck services. According to Apple, it “helps protect against security threats to apps on iOS 14 or later, reducing fraudulent use of these services.”
This is because App Attest allows developers to generate a special cryptographic key on a device and use it to validate the integrity of their app before their server provides access to sensitive data. The ultimate aim is to prevent hacked apps and those that can be sideloaded and modified through jailbreaking tweaks.
Apple offers more detail for developers using the App Attest Service in its Developer Documentation, including a guide on how to use the feature.
iOS 14 move offers more security for developers, and ultimately users too
The iOS 14 App Attest API should make apps more secure for developers, but it helps iPhone users too. However, the onus is on developers to use the feature (and it benefits them to do so). Sean Wright, Immersive Labs’ lead of application security, SME, says he hopes developers make use of the new API “especially for critical apps such as online banking.”
At the same time, Wright offers this advice to users: “Always ensure that you only install apps from the official app stores, unless you can be certain of the validity of the app.”
It’s something we often hear when talking about Google’s Android, which is more prone to issues because it lacks Apple’s “walled garden” approach. Even though it’s rare, Apple’s App Store can still play host to fraudulent and malware-ridden apps so it’s important to remain vigilant.
Apple’s iOS 14 comes with additional features that can help users gain more visibility and control into how their data is being used by app developers such as Facebook—including how apps are tracking people across their iPhones. I’d certainly advise you to make use of these as well.
