What to do when your old iPhone or iPad doesn't run iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 - TechRadar

ios.indah.link

Late September 2020 saw the release of iOS 14 and iPad equivalent iPadOS 14. Although Apple is better than most about supporting older equipment, not every device made the cut. That said, the cut-off was the same as it was for iOS 13, so if you have that you should be able to get iOS 14.

In other words, if your device is older than an iPhone 6s / iPhone SE (2016), an iPod touch 7th gen, the 5th-gen iPad, the iPad mini 4, or the iPad Air 2, the most recent operating system it’s ever going to run is iOS 12.

This article provides a guide regarding what to do with your older hardware, from offloading it to repurposing an iPhone or iPad into a dedicated unit for a specific task.

Recycle it

If you don’t want old devices hanging around – or yours is no longer working well –you can simply recycle it.

You might be aware of Apple’s credit program in the US, UK and other territories – but you won’t get any money for most devices that can't run iOS 14. You'll get a bit for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but nothing any older.

However, Apple will at least dispose of your old kit for free, leaving you with that warm, fuzzy glow of knowing you haven’t messed up the environment by tossing it in the trash. (Of course, your local recycling center may offer similar services.)

Sell it

Apple products keep their value more than most. You must, though, be realistic regarding the return you’ll get on years-old kit that can no longer be upgraded. Still, it’ll be more than nothing.

Prior to selling your iPhone or iPad, take a back-up if you’ll later need to restore it to a new device. Once that's done, go to Settings, tap your name in iCloud and sign out, then go to General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.

As for where and how to sell, we’ll go into that in more depth in another article (it can be quite complex), but in (very) brief: cash-in-hand is the best bet for hardware, and if you sell online, be wary of scammers.

Reset iOS device

Log out and reset your old Apple device before selling it (Image credit: Apple)

Update it as much as possible

Should you decide to keep hold of your device, there are two big issues to be aware of. First, it will get few – or perhaps even no – future security updates. On that basis, ensure it’s running the very latest iOS update available, and plan to primarily use the device offline.

Secondly, you will at some point start to find that apps and services require a more recent iOS/iPadOS than your device can run. So you’ll have to resign yourself to using older versions of some apps/games, and missing out on certain services. For example, Apple Arcade requires iOS 13.

Create an emergency backup phone

If you’re the kind of person who can’t do without a cell phone, an older device will still do in the case of an emergency. Consider resetting your old iPhone to factory settings, and then just having it hang around in case your other phone breaks.

Be mindful of differing SIM card requirements, though – you may not be able to just swap a SIM between your new and old iPhones, especially with newer SIM only deals. If that’s the case, consider getting a dedicated number for your backup phone, on a no-contract pay-and-go carrier service. Check the terms and conditions, in case you need to make a call every so often for your credit to remain intact.

Turn your device into a reader

Any reasonably recent iPhone, iPod touch or iPad will have an excellent screen, and that lends itself to reading. Whether you favor Apple Books, Kindle or a different service for your digital reading, an iPhone or iPod Touch makes for a great pocket-sized option when you fancy picking up a book – without grabbing one made from dead tree.

Old iPads, though, are where it’s really at, with their bigger displays giving prose more room to breathe. And if you’re into comics, an iPad makes for a superb standalone comics reader too – install Chunky Comic Reader, pay the one-off IAP, and you can easily transfer your favorite graphic novels across from shared folders on networked PCs, Macs, or hard drives.

Chunky Comic Reader

The Chunky app can transform an old iPad into a perfect comic book reader (Image credit: Michael Ferenduros)

Make a portable games machine

You won’t get Apple Arcade on any iPhone or iPad that can’t run iOS 14/iPadOS 14, but that doesn’t mean you can’t play superb games on older devices. Many thousands of titles exist for Apple mobile devices, from entirely free options to high-end premium fare.

Again, older kit may lack the most recent updates – or struggle to run some more demanding titles. But that still leaves you many thousands of games to choose from. And with a controller like the SteelSeries Nimbus for iPad or Gamevice for iPhone, you could turn an iPad into a dedicated gaming rig, and an iPhone into a handheld console.

Use it as an alarm clock

Even if an old iPhone’s battery barely charges, it can still have uses. Install The Clocks – which works even on pretty ancient versions of iOS – plug your device in, and stick it on your nightstand (possibly using something like Ikea’s Bergenes phone stand, which costs a mere $3.99 / £2.25 / AU$3).

Now you have a clock you can use at night, and multiple alarms to wake you up in the morning, without having to use your current iPhone. (This in itself can be a very good thing, getting the device with all your apps and games out of the bedroom, and away from late night/early morning temptation.)

The Clocks

The Clocks for iOS transforms an old device into a useful alarm clock (Image credit: Meanterm Inc)

Turn it into a music player

Similarly, old devices can make great standalone music players. Even when offline, you can play music transferred to an iPhone via iTunes (or via Finder on macOS Catalina and above). If you want to risk going online (Wi-Fi use on your own home network should be fine), you’ll be able to access several streaming services too.

This tip can be combined with the previous one, resulting in a nightlight/clock/music player creation that helps a child feel secure at night. (And when they’re old enough to read a digital clock, you can – with luck – keep them from rampaging about the house until a particular time!)

Keep it docked

There are other great uses for a docked iPhone, whether you’re in a home or office environment. It can be used with a focus timer, such as Forest, Bear Focus Timer, or Focus, and anti-stress tools like Oak and Pocketcoach.

If you suffer from distraction or hearing issues, use an old iPhone specifically for White Noise+. Alternatively, give your eyes and ears something to do by way of the ambient music/art generators by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers: Scape, Bloom: 10 Worlds, and Reflection.

M1 Mac users report iOS app download issues in new bug - iMore

ios.indah.link

Macbook Air M1Source: Daniel Bader / iMore

There are reports amongst users of Apple's M1 Macs that some people are having issues downloading iOS apps from the Mac App Store.

With the introduction of Apple silicon, Apple brought support for iOS and iPadOS apps to Mac if developers choose to make them available for download. Apple has recently put a stop to sideloading iOS and iPadOS apps on the Mac, but those restrictions should only apply to apps that aren't officially available on Mac through the Mac App Store.

Reddit user DaisyLee2010 first notified us of the issue, stating in a post:

Anyone having issues download iOS apps on M1 Macs?

Anyone having issues download iOS apps on M1 Macs? from r/mac

At least two other users have confirmed the same problem in the thread, including one who passed the issue on to Apple support. According to that user, Apple support was not aware of any known issues and had escalated the ticket, with a turnaround of three days. In videos, clicking on the download button of a relevant app simply shows a quick spinning animation, with no further result.

VPN Deals: Lifetime license for $16, monthly plans at $1 & more

Twitter user Mark Osborn shared a similar issue on Thursday:

@AppleSupport I'm unable to install iPhone/iPad apps from the Mac AppStore on my new M1 MacBook Air. I click the install button and it fails silently on every app I've tried. The laptop is less than 1 day old. Any ideas?

Speaking to iMore, iOS developer Noah Evans confirmed the issue, having tried to download three separate apps from Apple's Mac App Store whilst operating on macOS Big Sur 11.2.1, the latest public version.

Evans confirmed he had previously never had any issues with the feature but had not downloaded any such apps in recent weeks. It's unclear what might be causing the issue, although as Evans notes it is likely a bug affecting downloads. If you've experienced a similar issue, or better yet have found a possible fix, let us know in the comments or over on Twitter.

This iOS trick makes rearranging iPhone apps a snap - TechSpot

ios.indah.link
Tips and Tricks: If you have ever tried rearranging app icons on your iPhone, you know it can be a frustrating pain in the rear. Apple made the process somewhat less unpleasant when it added a virtual iPhone screen to iTunes, allowing users to rearrange apps with their mouse. Of course, iTunes is gone now, so we are back with the tedious task of dragging apps one-by-one again.

Fortunately, someone on TikTok stumbled across a little known quirk in iOS that allows you to move multiple apps at once. Apple never announced this feature, and so far as we know.

Usually, moving apps around is done by first long pressing on an icon and selecting "Edit Home Screen" or continuing the long press until the apps begin to jiggle. Then you move the desired app to the edge of the screen until you reach the page where you want to place it. Then swipe back to the previous page and repeat the process for each one you want to move.

The trick works similarly, but with a step added to the middle of the process (above). After getting the icons to jiggle, select one of the apps you want to move, but instead of dragging it to the edge of the screen, just move it slightly out of place. Now, without lifting your finger, tap each of the other icons you want to move. You will see these apps slide under the finger holding the initial icon. Now move the whole stack to the edge of the screen until you reach your desired destination page and release them. The relocated apps will settle on the page from left to right in the reverse order that you selected them.

We discovered that you could also use this method to create folders quickly. To do this, follow the same steps, but you will not be dragging the stack to the screen's edge. Instead, you will move the stack to the last icon you want in the folder and hover over it. After about a second, iOS opens a square folder area with that last app already visible. Release the rest of them here, and voilà! Instant folder. Alternately you can just drop the stack on the last icon to instantly create a folder (above).

iOS 14.4's best iPhone and iPad features: 17 things you'll use every day - CNET

ios.indah.link

iOS 14 changes the iPhone's home screen.

Patrick Holland/CNET

Apple keeps making iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 even better by adding valuable new capabilities and features. Most recently, Apple released iOS 14.4, adding a new workout to Fitness Plus for Apple Watch owners. It also added a new Unity watch face to celebrate Black History Month. The update also included a series of security fixes for vulnerabilities that were actively being exploited. Yikes.

iOS 14.4 follows the addition of Apple ProRaw photos to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. Those new features join an already impressive list of capabilities that Apple brought to its mobile devices with the release of iOS 14 in September. iOS 14.5 is currently available in beta and is shaping up to be a significant update for iPhone owners.

For example, you can personalize your iPhone's home screen by creating custom app icons and placing new widgets wherever you want. And a new Scribble feature in the iPad update now lets you use the Apple Pencil ($125 at Amazon) to write in any text field, and the tablet will convert it to text, instead of always pulling up the keyboard. And that's just the beginning.

Here are the best tips and tricks we've discovered for iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. We'll frequently update this post, so check back for more fantastic tips.

App Library is the iPhone's new app drawer.

Jason Cipriani/CNET

1. Check out the new home screen features

The iPhone now has an app drawer-like feature called App Library, which acts as a warehouse to store all of the apps you don't regularly use. You can access the App Library by swiping from right to left on your screen past all of your current home screens. Another first for the iPhone is the ability to place widgets on the home screen. Apple provided developers with the tools to create a new style of widget that's sure to make your Android friends jealous. We go into more detail about the home screen changes here

2. Create a custom Smart Stack widget

Speaking of widgets, you're not locked into using Apple's curated Smart Stack widget. You can create your own stack of widgets using the same technique you'd use to create an app folder. Seriously, it takes longer to decide which widgets you can include than it does to create it.

Just keep stacking widgets until you're happy.

3. Make your own app icons

Apple also added new features to its Shortcuts app, with the most popular addition being the ability to create your own app icons and fully customize the look of your phone. So instead of the Apple Mail app icon, you can download an icon that replaces it with a picture of a cute cat or the Gmail icon and use that to launch the app. The process is somewhat tedious, but if you want a home screen that's unlike any other, it's well worth your time.

Custom icons are all the rage right now.

4. Use apps without installing them, thanks to App Clips

Think of App Clips as miniature apps that only show you a portion of what the full app can do. For example, a Yelp App Clip could show you business hours and the menu for a specific restaurant and nothing more. Want to try one? Open the Apple Maps app on your iPhone, search for Panera Bread, tap on a location and then select Order Food. Pretty cool, right? After using an App Clip, you can access it again in the App Library in the recently added folder.

iOS 14.3 brings with it ProRaw photo support on the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. Once you enable ProRaw, you'll see a new "RAW" button on the top right side of the native camera app.

Patrick Holland/CNET

5. iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max can take raw photos

This is surely a feature for photography buffs, but one that will hopefully pique the curiosity of those who are looking to get a bit more out of their iPhone camera. The release of iOS 14.3 adds Apple's ProRaw photo format, which allows you to take photos using the "raw" photography format, and make changes to it without any image degradation, as is the case when the photo is converted to a JPG (the standard for Apple's camera app).

For many more details and instructions on where to find the new setting, check out our complete ProRaw guide.

6. Work out at home with Fitness Plus

With gyms closed or running at limited capacity, now's the time to work out at home. Apple's Fitness Plus service is built directly into your iPhone, iPad ($273 at Amazon) and Apple TV ($180 at Best Buy), and it uses your Apple Watch to track your workout. The guided video workouts are released weekly, with options for all different fitness levels. Read our hands-on with the new service and then let us walk you through everything you need to know to set it up.

7. Time to take a walk

Speaking of Fitness Plus, iOS 14.4 and WatchOS 7.3 added a new workout called Time to Walk. Apple has enlisted celebrities who go on a virtual walk with you, telling stories that are meant to be inspiring, intertwined with personal music choices. You'll need to install updates on your watch and phone before you can use it. Here's how to set up and use the new workout.

8. Picture-in-Picture comes to the iPhone

You're no longer forced to decide whether you want to watch a Twitch stream or browse Reddit on your iPhone. With iOS 14, you can do both at the same time now that Apple has added picture-in-picture mode to the iPhone. The iPad has had this feature for a couple of years now, so it's nice to see the iPhone get it as well. When you start watching a video you only need to leave the app and go back to the home screen to trigger PiP. There are some apps, like YouTube, that don't support the feature. You can view a list of all the apps installed on your phone that support it by going to Settings > General > Picture in Picture. Read more about picture-in-picture to get a better idea of when and where it works.

9. Deleting apps can be confusing now

With the addition of the App Library, there's now an extra step when it comes to deleting an app from your phone and for long-time iPhone users, it's not at all straightforward. But it doesn't have to be too confusing; we walk you through the new steps

10. Ditch Apple Mail and Safari

Apple added the ability to delete its own apps from your iPhone a few years ago, but you still couldn't set apps like Gmail or Outlook as your default email app. Now you can, but Apple has limited this new feature to only the email and web browsers. It only takes a few taps to make the change, after which you won't have to deal with Apple's apps ever again.

default-app-ios-14

It's true, you can set some default apps on iOS 14.

11. AirPods Pro has a new audio feature

The iPhone and iPad aren't the only devices that received a big update. Apple's AirPods Pro also got a small firmware update that added a new feature called Spatial Audio. You'll, of course, need to use an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14 to use the feature. With both devices updated, whenever you're watching a video the sound will follow the movements of your head, adjusting with each twist and turn. CNET's David Carnoy described it as an "out-of-bud experience." And he's not wrong.

12. The iPad looks more like a Mac than ever

iPadOS 14 includes several new features and enhancements that bring its interface closer to looking and working like a Mac. Or is it the Mac that's starting to look like an iPad with MacOS Big Sur? Either way, you'll want to learn all you can about the new iPad features in iPadOS 14

Can't find that emoji you need? Search for it.

Jason Cipriani/CNET

13. Hidden features are the best features

Not to be left out, there are several hidden features in iOS 14 that do some truly amazing things. For instance, a new back tap feature lets you tap on the back of your phone two or three times, triggering a task like taking a screenshot or launching an app. We've found a total of nine hidden features worth sharing with you so far and plan to keep adding to the list.

14. New privacy features

Keeping your information private is one of Apple's main marketing points, and iOS 14 is going even further to help keep your information private. There are new location sharing settings that will limit whether an app sees your exact location or a more general area. There's also a new notification dot that will tell you when an app is using your phone's camera or mic, and finer controls over which photos an app has access to. Check out all of the new privacy features and how to use them.

ios-14-location-precise-vs-general

You don't have to tell apps exactly where you are if you don't want to.

15. New camera tricks

There are several subtle but important new features in the Camera app. For example, when taking a photo at night, there's a new guide to remind you to keep still. You'll see crosshairs that show you where to keep the camera. There's also a new exposure adjustment dial, and you can snap multiple photos much quicker. Learn how to use and where to find the new features, complete with animated images.

iOS 14 makes it so you can take consecutive photos faster. There's less time from one photo to another.

Patrick Holland/CNET

16. Up your selfie game

Another new feature in the Camera app is a new setting for the front-facing camera that is sure to help your selfies shine. The new mirror mode forces the camera to act more like a, well, mirror, which can make it easier to make sure your shot is framed and lined up the way you want. We show you where to find the new setting

17. Still want more? We gotcha

As a bonus round, we've compiled a few more tips to do even more, like tag someone in a group conversation in the Messages app and use Apple's new Translate app to carry a conversation in two completely different languages. We walk you through those two tips, plus a few more of our favorite features

There's still plenty more to learn and figure out in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, so we're just getting started. Just getting started with a new iPhone 12? Here's how to set it up. After that's done, be sure to check these settings. Finally, don't forget to transfer your Google Authenticator accounts to your new phone.

PUBG: New State is a futuristic new battle royale game for Android and iOS - The Verge

ios.indah.link

The PUBG universe is expanding with a new mobile title for iOS and Android called PUBG: New State, which catapults the battle royale ahead in time for a more futuristic take on the massive multiplayer genre.

Set in 2051, PUBG: New State takes place years after the current PUBG games (which are set in approximately modern times) on a new map called Troi and promises to bring with it a slew of near-future weapons and vehicles, like drones and deployable combat shields. Based on the early images, it’s a similar vibe to fellow shooter Call of Duty’s semi-futuristic military tech from games like Black Ops 3 and 4.

The new game is also set to dive deeper into the lore of the overall PUBG universe, which is apparently a thing that surprisingly exists for a game whose most notable cultural signifier is the use of a cast-iron skillet as a weapon. What the time jump will mean for beloved PUBG characters like Lunchmeat, though, will have to wait for the game’s release.

New State also promises to shake up the formula for PUBG games, with in-game weapon customization options that will allow players to modify their weapons within a match in a way that sounds similar to Apex Legends’ weapon attachments.

New State marks the third battle royale game under the PUBG umbrella — although, unlike its mobile cousin PUBG Mobile, PUBG: New State will be developed by PUBG Studio, the company behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the PC and console version of the original game. (PUBG Mobile is actually a separate title developed by Chinese tech giant Tencent.) And despite the mobile nature of the title, PUBG Studio is making big promises of “ultra-realistic graphics that push the limits of mobile gaming.”

PUBG: New State will be available on Android and iOS later in 2021, with alpha tests also set for later this year.
