Apple ceases signing iOS 14.0.1 following release of iOS 14.1 - AppleInsider

ios.indah.link

Apple on Tuesday stopped signing iOS 14.0.1 code following the release of iOS 14.1, blocking users from downgrading to the older operating system.

Released last week, iOS 14.1 pairs with the newly released iPhone 12 series to deliver HDR video playback and editing to contemporary iPhones.

A number of fixes were also included, addressing issues like widget management quirks, UI bugs, a Mail problem that saw some email sent from an incorrect alias, a bug that prevented Apple Music song downloads, streaming video issues and incorrect labeling of a connected Apple Watch's case material. The update also corrected an issue that prevented users from setting up a family member's Apple Watch, a major feature introduced with iOS 14.

The now defunct iOS 14.0.1 update was pushed out in September to resolve a bug that caused user-selected email and web browser defaults to revert to Apple's first-party Mail and Safari apps after a system restart.

Today's stoppage means users can no longer download the out-of-date operating system from Apple's servers. Apple regularly ceases signing of older code to prevent installation of past iOS versions following the release of a new iteration, a practice that keeps users safe from new threats and ensures devices are running the latest feature-rich software.

Apple is currently testing iOS 14.2, which integrates the Home app's Intercom feature, a Shazam module for Control Center and more.

iOS 14 Poised to Surpass iOS 13 Installations as Adoption Nears 50% - MacRumors

ios.indah.link

More than five weeks after release, iOS 14 adoption is set to overtake iOS 13 as the most installed version of iOS, according to data obtained from Mixpanel's iOS 14 adoption tracker.

Apple hasn't shared ‌iOS 14‌ installation numbers of its own, but Mixpanel's ‌iOS 14‌ adoption tracker monitors the number of devices that have each operating system installed. According to Mixpanel's numbers at the time of writing, ‌iOS 14‌ is installed on more than 46.07 percent of devices, which is just about equal with the 46.57 percent of devices running iOS 13.

Over the course of the last week, data has also shifted on an hourly basis with ‌iOS 14‌ occasionally overtaking iOS 13 as new devices are activated and counted in Mixpanel's data.

‌iOS 14‌ in the next day or two will surpass iOS 13 as the most installed version of iOS and should steadily rise from there. At the current time, 7.36 percent of devices also continue to run a version of iOS earlier than iOS 13, and those likely represent older devices unable to be upgraded to newer software.

Adoption of ‌iOS 14‌ is about on pace with adoption of iOS 13, but it's a little bit behind. iOS 13 was installed on 50 percent of all devices on October 16, 2019, with ‌iOS 14‌ taking longer to hit that exact target.

The slower adoption of ‌iOS 14‌ is something of a surprise given that the update introduces a new Home screen design and support for Home screen widgets, plus the App Library, compact UI with smaller phone calls, Translate app, and updates to Maps, Siri, HomeKit, Health, Messages, and more. Full details on all of the new features in ‌iOS 14‌ can be found in our roundup.

iOS 14's Upcoming Anti-Tracking Prompt Sparks Antitrust Complaint in France - MacRumors

ios.indah.link

Starting early next year, iOS 14 will require apps to get opt-in permission from users to collect their random advertising identifier, which advertisers use to deliver personalized ads and track how effective their campaigns were.

Ahead of this change, The Wall Street Journal reports that advertising companies and publishers have filed a complaint against Apple with France's competition authority, arguing that the enhanced privacy measures would be anticompetitive.

According to the report, the complaint alleges that the wording of Apple's permission prompt will lead most users to decline tracking of their device's advertising identifier, which could result in lost revenue. In August, Facebook warned advertisers that the prompt could lead to a more than 50 percent drop in Audience Network publisher revenue.

In a statement, Apple reiterated its belief that "privacy is a fundamental right," adding that "a user's data belongs to them and they should get to decide whether to share their data and with whom." Apple said that its own data collection doesn't count as tracking because it doesn't share the data with other companies.

Apple already delayed the introduction of the prompt until early 2021 to provide developers with more time to make the necessary changes. In a statement in September, Apple said the prompt will be displayed on an app-by-app basis:

We believe technology should protect users' fundamental right to privacy, and that means giving users tools to understand which apps and websites may be sharing their data with other companies for advertising or advertising measurement purposes, as well as the tools to revoke permission for this tracking. When enabled, a system prompt will give users the ability to allow or reject that tracking on an app-by-app basis. We want to give developers the time they need to make the necessary changes, and as a result, the requirement to use this tracking permission will go into effect early next year.

In the meantime, users who do not want apps to be able to access their device's advertising identifier can go to Settings > Privacy > Tracking and toggle off Allow Apps to Request to Track.

Apple's developer website offers more information about the upcoming prompt.

Apple starts displaying its own search results in iOS 14 in latest move to build 'Google killer' - Daily Mail

ios.indah.link

Apple has started showing its own search results to iPhone users, in a move that reports claim is the latest in efforts to develop a possible Google Killer.

A barely noticed change in iOS 14 saw Apple show its own results or link directly to websites when users enter a search term on the home screen, the FT reports

According to the report, showing Apple search results in iOS14 is the latest in a series of moves that has fuelled rumours of a potential Apple search product.

Experts suggest the move could be linked to the US Department of Justice case against Google's dominance of the search market, that could see its up to $12 billion deal to be the default search engine on iOS and Android take centre stage.

The DoJ could decide to block that move in future as part of an antitrust deal as Google is already the default search engine on Android-based devices.

Industry insiders claim showing its own search results in iOS14 could be the start of an attack on Google - as the company also ramps up in-house search development.

The Silicon Valley firm poached John Giannandrea, Google's head of search, from the tech giant in 2018 to work on AI capabilities and Siri - but he also brought with him years of running the world's largest search engine, experts claim.

Apple have a 'credible team that I think has the experience and the depth, if they wanted to, to build a more general search engine,' according to Bill Coughran, Google's former engineering head, speaking to the FT.

The company has also been seeking to expand the division, with job adverts for search engineers looking to 'define and implement the architecture of Apple's groundbreaking search technology'.

Apple is one of very few resources capable of taking on Google, with a market cap of over $2 trillion and $200 billion cash in hand, it can take the 'long game' that would be required to build a search engine that works well enough to compete.

Experts claim that any Apple search engine would be very focused on user privacy, something the company has sold itself on when compared to rivals such as Google.

The latest update to the iPhone operating system moves some Google searches aside in favour of Apple results - including the new 'Today View'.

This shows an Apple-generated list of search suggestions rather than Google results and also include autocomplete-style results produced by Apple.

Apple has its own web crawler, that is used to scour the internet to develop search results - they are the cornerstone of any search engine including Google.

Named, AppleBot, experts claim it has been spotted scrawling websites 'a ridiculous number of times' in recent months, which is a sign Apple are gathering information.

Although it is also likely that the expansion of AppleBot is to improve Siri and Spotlight search results for various Apple systems.

The idea of an Apple search engine has been speculated on since 2015 when AppleBot was first confirmed by the company.

According to Sridhar Ramaswamy, co-founder of search firm Neeva, Apple is one of the only companies big enough to be able to search the whole of the internet.

He told the FT that smaller rivals such as DuckDuckGo and Neeva licence their index, used to build search results, from Microsoft's Bing.

'Apple’s position is very unique because it has the iPhone and iOS. It controls the default browser,” Ramaswamy told the FT, adding expanding to search 'feels natural' for Apple due to its ability to gather data and learn user behaviour at scale.

Apple Music for Android beats iOS to Crossfade - AppleInsider

ios.indah.link

Apple has rolled out an update to Apple Music on Android, one that adds enhanced sharing options as well as Autoplay and changes to search, along with a feature that hasn't yet arrived on iOS - Crossfade.

Updated on Monday, version 3.4 of Apple Music on Android includes a number of changes that brings it largely in line with iOS 14's iteration. As part of the change, the app has been given a makeover, complete with features the iOS version has offered for the last month.

These changes include an updated home page, with a new Listen Now tab instead of For You, as well as an updated layout designed to encourage music discovery as well as quick listening of favorite tracks. Under the same change, the search has been refined to include more metadata on songs, along with large category searches covering moods, genres, and specific items like "Charts."

The Autoplay feature also makes the transition to Android, with users able to let Apple Music select the next songs to play once a playlist has been exhausted. When enabled, Apple Music will analyze the playlist and select songs that seem to be similar, such as the same artist or genre.

Social media users will be able to share their current listening selection with others, by using the Share Song option in the menu to post to Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat.

One unusual option that Android has is Crossfade, a feature that has Apple Music overlapping the end of one song with the beginning of another for a few seconds, fading between the two for a semi-seamless and continuous listening experience. While the option is available on Mac, it has yet to be made available on the iOS or iPadOS versions of the app.

The Google Play listing also mentions it includes "improved app performance."

Apple Music for Android requires an Android phone or tablet running Android 5.0 or later, or a Chromebook with support for Android apps.
