Apple Releases Third Betas of iOS 14.3 and iPadOS 14.3 to Developers [Update: Public Beta Available] - MacRumors

ios.indah.link

Apple today seeded the third betas of upcoming iOS 14.3 and iPadOS 14.3 updates to developers for testing purposes, two weeks after releasing the second betas and a month after the launch of iOS and iPadOS 14.2.

iOS 14

iOS and iPadOS 14.3 can be downloaded through the Apple Developer Center or over the air after the proper developer profile has been installed.

The iOS 14.3 update brings the ProRAW format to the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. ProRAW is designed for those who prefer to shoot in RAW but also want to take advantage of the Apple image pipeline data like noise reduction and multi-frame exposure adjustments.

The ProRAW feature can be enabled in the Camera section of the Settings app for those who have installed the iOS 14.3 beta on a new ‌‌iPhone 12 Pro‌‌ or Pro Max. When enabled, there's a RAW toggle in the upper right side of the camera app that can be tapped to turn it off or on. Photos taken with ProRAW are 25MB in size.

Ecosia, a search engine that plants trees when people conduct searches, can now be set as the default search engine on iPhone and iPad.

Though not a feature, the iOS 14.3 update hints at some future product releases. There's an icon that may reveal the design of the AirPods Studio, along with details on AirTags and the Find My feature that's meant to let third-party devices integrate with the ‌Find My‌ app.

Code in iOS 14.3 suggests Apple is laying the groundwork to add support for third-party item trackers and Bluetooth devices in the ‌Find My‌ app, allowing these devices to be tracked right alongside iPhones and iPads. It's not yet clear which items will support the feature or when support will roll out, but we could be hearing additional information soon.

In iOS 14.3, it's easier than ever to launch apps with custom icons right from the Home Screen, which is great for those who prefer to customize their Home Screens.

When opening an app that has a custom icon created using Shortcuts, it is no longer routed through the Shortcuts app and is instead able to open much more quickly. There's still a banner that pops up, but it's a more streamlined experience than before.

Other new features include pregnancy data in the Health app, third-party app suggestions at setup in certain countries, support for scanning App Clips QR codes with the camera app, an option to update HomeKit products with the Home app, and more, with a full list available in our iOS 14.3 features guide.

Apple is releasing the third developer beta of iOS 14.3 today, which includes new features such as Apple ProRAW for iPhone 12 Pro users. Today’s release of iOS 14.3 beta 3 comes two weeks after iOS 14.3 beta 2 was released to developers.

iPhone battery bad? Here are three of the biggest iOS 14.2 battery hogs, along with some solutions - ZDNet

ios.indah.link

iOS 14 was released in September, and here we are in December and users continue to complain about poor battery life. Now iOS 14.2 is out (or iOS 14.2.1 if you are running an iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro) and I'm still hearing from people who feel that their battery life has taken a big hit since installing the update.

But I've found three things that have helped me get more out of each recharge, and help me make it through the day.

Must read: Top 10 Google Chrome plugins for 2020

#1: Make careful use of widgets

I've noticed that the more widgets I use, the more battery life takes a hit. I don't find the built-in widgets that come with iOS to be too bad for battery life (although even they can be buggy), but third-party apps can be problematic.

Identifying a rogue widget is easy -- delete it and see if the problem goes away (or gets a little better).

If battery life has gotten worse since installing iOS 14, widgets would be the first thing that I'd be looking at.

#2: Google Chrome is a big battery hog

Switching to Safari makes a massive difference if you browse a lot. For me, switching -- temporarily -- from Chrome to Safari added about an hour of battery life.

Safari has always been better in terms of battery life, but the gulf between the two has grown significantly in iOS 14.

Same goes, to a lesser extent, for Mail versus Gmail, or Calendar versus Google Calendar. It might seem like I'm picking on Google apps, but these are the apps I use the most, and they're the ones where I can see the difference.

For better battery life, go with the stock apps.

#3: No cell coverage can really drain better

Ever since Apple introduced the Battery pane in Settings that allows users to see what is draining the battery the most, I've known that no cell coverage eats at the battery. If there's poor cell coverage, the iPhone works harder to try to establish a cell connection. It's that simple, and there's no free lunch.

The more work your smartphone has to do, the more battery is used.

But something's changed.

Under iOS 13, no cell coverage would account for about 2 percent of battery usage over the course of a normal day. Now there are days when I see this taking as much as 10 percent, with 8 percent now being normal.

No Cell Coverage battery drain under iOS 14 appears much higher than before.

No Cell Coverage battery drain under iOS 14 appears much higher than before.

Nothing else has changed, and it's pretty consistent that I have to conclude that this is an issue with iOS 14.

So, what's the solution? Well, I've found that turning off cellular when I'm in a dark spot helps a bit, as does leaving my phone in areas of my home and office where the strongest cell signal can be found.

These help, but they have their limitations.

iPhone 8 and later now support 1080p FaceTime calls with iOS 14.2 - 9to5Mac

ios.indah.link

It turns out Apple included a stealthy update with iOS 14.2 that didn’t appear in the release notes. With the latest public release, iPhone 8 and later have gained support for 1080p FaceTime HD video calls on Wi-Fi and for iPhone 12, on 5G and Wi-Fi.

Discovered by MacMagazine (via Google Translate), Apple didn’t detail the upgrade in resolution for FaceTime calls that has arrived for iPhones all the way back to iPhone 8. However, it looks like the support came with the public release of iOS 14.2

After some digging, MacMagazine noticed Apple quietly updated the specs pages for devices like iPhone XR shortly after iOS 14.2 debuted in November:

We discovered this because the iPhone XR spec page, for example, did not list video calls via FaceTime HD (1080p) until November 4th, but started to list from November 9th.

And going further, Apple highlights the FaceTime HD 1080p support on its iPhone comparison tool with the iPhone 8 and later offering the higher-res support over Wi-Fi.

The only advantage of the iPhone 12 lineup when it comes to FaceTime HD is support for the resolution over both Wi-Fi and 5G.

MacMagazine notes in its tests that the improvement to FaceTime HD on supported iPhones is “quite noticeable.”

For now, FaceTime HD is not supported on iPad.

How to Use Shazam's Music-Recognition Feature in iOS 14 - PCMag

ios.indah.link

Apple acquired music-discovery app Shazam in 2018, and quickly made it an ad-free experience. While Shazam has remained a standalone app available across mobile operating systems, Apple has now integrated Shazam more tightly into its ecosystem with iOS 14, allowing iPhone and iPad users to name that tune without opening a separate app. Here's how to use it.

Add Shazam to Control Center

shazam integration

To quickly figure out what song is playing, the best way to access Shazam is by adding it to Control Center. Here’s how to enable it:

This adds a Shazam icon to Control Center. To move its position, tap and hold the hamburger icon to the right of the Music Recognition option and drag it up or down. To remove it, tap the red minus (-) icon and tap Remove.

When you need to find out the name and artist of the song you’re currently bopping your head to, swipe down from the top-right of your iPhone (or swipe up from the bottom if you have a Home button) to reveal Control Center, then tap the Shazam icon to start the search. Shazam will dig through its library and display the track name, artist name, and a small single/album cover art image as a notification banner at the top of the screen.

shazam app

Tapping on the banner will open Shazam’s website with more track information, where you can also check out synced lyrics. If you have the Shazam app installed, you will be taken to the app and presented with additional track and artist information.

Given Shazam is now an Apple app, the option to open the song in Apple Music features prominently, but you can tap the three-dot menu on the top right to open it within another music-streaming service, like Spotify. Connect your Shazam app to Apple Music or Spotify, and the app will display the option to open your Shazam'd songs in that app going forward.

Ask Siri to Start Shazam

Siri Music Recognition

Another way to use Shazam’s music-recognition feature is to ask Siri: "What song is playing?" Siri will discover and reveal additional track information via a notification banner, similar to the Control Center method. Additionally, you can tell Siri “play more songs like this,” and it will queue up similar tracks in Apple Music.

Evoking Siri to discover music is faster than opening Control Center and tapping the Shazam icon. On the other hand, by using Siri, you won’t be able to disguise the fact that you don’t know a song. But however you access Shazam, the app can help you avoid feeling like an out-of-touch old fogey when it comes to what the kids are listening to these days.
